Everyone has their own personal reasons for owning a firearm, whether it’s for hunting, target shooting, or self-defense. The decision to legally carry a gun concealed in a public setting is a very serious decision that should not be taken lightly. The following are my own personal reasons why I carry concealed.
I am the first responder
I’m not trying to diminish the role of law enforcement officers, firefighters, and EMT’s, but the reality is that they are actually the second responders. Rarely, do they ever happen to be somewhere where they can either prevent or even witness something bad happening. Almost always, they arrive after the incident is already over. If something happens to me, my family, or someone I’m with, I automatically become the first responder because I am there. Everyone else is a second responder. If action needs to be taken, it will be up to me when waiting for help is not an option. Help is typically minutes away when seconds count.
Teleporting law enforcement officers isn’t feasible yet
Police officers are awesome. They have a thankless job in which they have to be dedicated to protecting the public while risking their own lives in the process. Unfortunately, unless they happen to be in the right place at the right time, it will probably take several minutes for them to respond to an incident in progress. Maybe someday in the future, it will be possible to beam people from one place to another, but not yet. Honestly, even by the time the first 911 call is made it’s usually too late.
Carrying a gun makes me more careful and cautious
One of the things I’ve realized when carrying my gun is that I am much more aware of my surroundings at all times. I don’t carry a gun because I’m looking for trouble. On the contrary, I carry one because I don’t want trouble and I’d much rather not be in a situation where I’d have to use it. Anything that I can do to avoid dark alleys, suspicious looking people, or uncertain situations is always preferable. Statistically speaking, concealed carry permit holders are among the most law abiding segment of the population that is 5 times less likely to commit a violent crime and 14 times less likely to commit a non-violent crime. This is a good group to be a part of.
Because 186,873 is a huge number
According to USA Today, there are 186,873 outstanding warrants for felons in this country. These people are walking among us on a daily basis. Part of this problem comes from criminals fleeing to another state and the state that issued the warrant simply doesn’t have the resources to bring them back. Just ask anyone in law enforcement if they’ve ever had to release a known wanted criminal because the state that they were wanted in didn’t want to come get them. Now they walk among us freely.
Deterrence is a real thing
I’m not trying to suggest that I use my gun to deter crime or scare away criminals by showing it. That defeats the purpose of carrying concealed and is oftentimes illegal. What I mean is that as more concealed carry licenses are issued and more people actually carry guns, criminals will more often have second thoughts about committing a crime. Criminals want easy targets. Prison surveys have shown that most offenders are more concerned with their victims possibly being armed than they are of the police.
